This course is three (3) units of the 12 units that are in the Grade 1 (there are 8 units in the Coxswain Grade 2).

MARI003 – Comply with regulations to ensure safe operation of a vessel up to 12 metres
You study Theory by Correspondence kit (at home in your own time), then finalize the course with a 1 day Assessment and Practical, face to face with a trainer.
The final day is both Theory exams and doing the Practical (training and assessment).
TIME: Takes about a week of written, plus study time (at home in your own time), plus 1 day Exams and Practical Assessment.

Coxswain Grade 3 operators (choosing to work without a physical CoC (card/ticket) from AMSA) will require a valid medical certificate (AMSA Form 1850) whether in any new application or while operating and wishing to comply without a physical card/ticket.

You will need:
You do a Correspondence (at home in your own time) Course to cover the Theory and a little of the Practical (ropes, knots, splicing, whipping).
You must be able to access the internet and must be able to work by yourself, finding things online, researching etc. The Australian Boating Manual (Dick Gandy) is also needed, which you can get as a digital or hard copy. Digital is good because you can easily search for the information needed to answer questions in the Correspondence (at home in your own time) Course. Some people prefer a hard copy.
Either way, you need to get an Australian Boating Manual for yourself.

When your enrolment is processed you will be notified that your boxed kit is ready – you can collect it, or we can mail it to you. Kits are usually available within 24-48 hours.
You do the written work and then study the theory (for as long as you need to know it well). All up – its actually a 7 day course if you were to sit in a classroom, but we do NO classroom work. It is self paced study, so no time is wasted. As most of our students already know boats, most can do it all fairly quickly – do it at your own speed, as fast or as slow as you want. Every thing you need to know by the end is what you are ‘supposed to’ do on a commercial vessel anyhow.
Once you have done the Theory, written the answers to all the questions in the Workbook we send you, and studied what we tell you to study, you meet the trainer/assessor at an agreed location and finalize it with the assessment and practical.
When you meet with the trainer / assessor your Theory written work is checked and discussed, then you get in the boat (your boat if you have a commercial boat) and do all the practical training, as well as assessment. This links to the AMSA list of what we must Train and Assess.
When you have passed our final exam you get a Certificate from us, (we give you all the guidance, all the forms, everything you need to apply to AMSA – you just follow the instructions).
We operate 7 days a week.
Some days are fully booked, but students change regularly and gaps appear all the time. We have vessels available at Woodman Point / Jervoise Bay, where the main office is, but we also send trainers everywhere in Australia* (you just arrange and pay for transport and accommodation of a trainer to come to you – we charge you nothing extra). For Workplace groups it is often cheaper to get 1 trainer to come to you for 1 or 2 days, than for you to send a number of workers to the trainer in the metro area.
*Alternative location must be able to supply the required equipment/vessel for the practical . Contact us to discuss prior to booking.
The Practical can ONLY be done on a legal commercial vessel. There are commercial vessels available to hire in Fremantle from a number of companies if you do not have access to your own surveyed vessel. Vessel hire is generally $600 per day, however for students we keep the max cost per student to $250 each for up to 1 day if you choose to hire our vessel. If your own vessel is illegal or unregistered etc, it cannot be used.
It must be a legal Commercial Vessel – compliant with the newest AMSA regulations. i.e. Certificate of Operation, SMS etc.
All courses provided by Australian Boat Schools have been developed with extensive input from employers to ensure that all participants have the best chance of providing value the moment they start work. Employers are wanting people who have relevant skills and knowledge, along with contingency management skills to find the information that they need for the job at hand. You will need to do research yourself and find the necessary information that a Coxswain should be able to find in the workplace.

Please note that this is a Coxswain course and is not a course for computer skills nor reading and writing (you will need these skills before doing this course).
